Muster roll workers announce fresh round of protests
TURA: After the casual workers’ protest of donning black badges to work failed to evoke any response from the government, the All Meghalaya Muster Roll Workers’ Union (AMMRWU) on Friday announced yet another round of agitations scheduled to begin from November 18. In an effort to get their demands fulfilled, casual workers from Garo Hills had earlier this week donned black badges to work as a mark of protest against the government’s inaction. However, as the government has not issued any response, the workers have decided to stage sit-in demonstrations for three days from November 18 at different government offices in Garo Hills. It may be mentioned that the workers had earlier submitted a charter of demands to the government that included leave entitlements, maternity benefits, earned leave, skill upgradation, release of pending wages and arrears and service regularisation according to merit.
Teachers’ plea to allow children to sit for examinations
TURA: In the wake of pending salaries, SSA school teachers from West Garo Hills have petitioned the Deputy Commissioner who is also the chairman of the SSA urging him to direct school authorities in the district to allow their children to sit for their final examinations even if their school fees have not been cleared. The teachers under the banner of the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers Association (AGHSSASTA), informed that some of the schools had already issued notifications that students would not be allowed to appear for their examinations and that their results would be withheld if they fail to clear their fees. Pointing out that their salaries have been irregular all year round, the teachers urged the DC to intervene in the matter so that their children’s education will remain unaffected. It may be mentioned that the SSA teachers have not received their salaries from the month of August to October.
