Grant withheld due to convocation boycott

SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has clarified that there is no violation of act, statute or ordinances by the vice chancellor (VC) as alleged by the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA).
In a statement issued here on Monday, it said that the release of NEHUTA’s annual grant has been withheld because the association gave a boycott call to the 25th Convocation held on November 28.
The university said that NEHUTA being an employees’ association established under the statute 44 of the NEHU Acts & Statutes had violated statute 44 (3), by calling for a boycott during the convocation.
“As NEHUTA is receiving its funding as grant from a public funded university, therefore it cannot indulge in any such activities, whatsoever, which will damage the image of the institution,” the statement said.
It also said that the university has resolved to take suitable measures within the rules to ensure that such incidents do not happen.
Moreover, the university also stated that the VC of NEHU has not flouted the financial rules of the Government of India as the process of the award of tender is being followed during the incumbency of the earlier VC and the same process is still going on till date.
Rather the university is saving some amount of resources by following the existing principle, it added.
