Registration of merchants’ body suspended in Williamnagar
WILLIAMNAGAR: In the light of several complaints of illegal collection of money from shops having been received from various sources, the District Registrar of East Garo Hills has temporarily suspended the registration of Williamnagar Main Market Merchants’ Association. The official order issued in this regard stated that there had been illegal collection of money from the shopkeepers and local vegetables vendors going on in the Williamnagar Main Market and the Williamnagar Municipal Board (WMB) had been threatened and urged to stop collection of taxes from the market with effect from November 1. Further, the order stated that a letter had been issued to the board claiming that the Williamnagar Main Market does not belong to WMB and as such it has no right to collect taxes from the shopkeepers and vendors. The District Registrar also had received reports of unauthorised issue of No Objection Certificate (NOC) to set up shops in the main market. Meanwhile, the Soil Bazaar Merchants’ Association of Williamnagar in East Garo Hills recently held a meeting and elected new office bearers. The association elected Ledison Sangma as president, Garwin Sangma as vice president, Jognath R Sangma as general secretary, Leningstone Sangma as joint secretary, Sengjen Sangma as accountant and Nekgen Momin as treasurer besides 8 other executive members.

BSF Raising Day celebrations
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Ftr Border Security Force (BSF), as a curtain raiser to its 55th Raising Day, organised a series of socio-cultural, awareness programmes and sports events starting Saturday along the Indo-Bangladesh border which culminated on Monday. The events, which will continue till Nov 30 along the border areas of Shillong Ftr BSF followed by main event on December 1, ranged from cultural and entertainment shows in bordering areas, lecture-cum-demonstration to mini-marathon and other sports activities in different location of sector Tura and sector Jowai. 26 Bn BSF under sector BSF Tura organised a cultural & entertainment programme at border village Merengipara of South West Garo Hills. Jazz Band of BSF entertained over 450 persons including children, youth and the elderly. While 97 Bn under sector Jowai showed documentary videos to the border villagers. 123 Bn under sector Jowai organised drawing competition and cricket match between teams of border villages. 75 Bn under sector Tura organised a mini-marathon and 30 Bn under sector Jowai organised a football tournament for teams of Lyngkhat and Pyrdwah in East Khasi Hills.

Casual workers begin stir
TURA: Muster roll workers under the banner of the All Meghalaya Muster Roll Workers Union (AMMRWU) on Monday began their three-day sit-in demonstration in offices of different government departments all over the state. They also threatened to continue with another round of protests next week if the government ignores their current protest which comes to an end on Wednesday. The casual workers have been demanding leave entitlements, maternity benefits, earned leave, skill upgradation, release of pending wages and arrears and service regularisation as per merit among others, which the government has till now failed to address. Casual workers from various government departments like PHE, PWD-NEC, Irrigation, Soil, Water Resources, Horticulture, Agriculture, etc. from all over Garo Hills participated on the first day of the agitation.

CM to attend co-operative week
TURA: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will attend the ongoing 66th All India Co-operative Week, 2019 celebration on the concluding day on Wednesday at the Tura Police Parade Ground, informed the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Government of Meghalaya. The celebration is being organised by the Registrar of Cooperative Societies in collaboration with Meghalaya Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd and all the state-level cooperative federations. A mini exhibition-cum-sale of the products of different cooperative societies will also be organised on the occasion, the release added.

Dimchrang Fest on December 10, 11
TURA: The Ampati Arts & Cultural Society, South West Garo Hills, in collaboration with the District Administration and line departments, will organise the Dimchrang Festival 2019, the annual winter festival at Ampati on December 10 and 11. During the festival, various events including marathon, industrial exhibition, talent hunt, cultural show, rock show, futsal and other indigenous games will be organised. In the run-up to the festival, auditions for the talent hunt, which is free and open to all, will be conducted on December 4 and 5 at MFC Ampati, opposite to Mother’s Union School from 10 am. Teen beats, teen steps, teen art and teen talk are some of the categories that will be included in the talent hunt.
