NONGPOH: In an incident which brought fear among the employees of the Umden CHC in Ri Bhoi, a nurse working in the centre escaped from the clutches of an alleged rapist who broke into her residential quarter.
Sources informed that the incident took place on November 22 around 12.30 am, when the miscreant broke open the window of the quarter and allegedly attempted to rape the nurse.
Fortunately, the miscreant, who had fully covered his face, left the scene after the nurse fervently begged him to desist from raping her and offered him Rs 2,000.
It was also informed that the miscreant had also threatened her of coming back if she had informed about the incident to anybody.
Protesting against the incident, employees of the Umden CHC have gone on mass casual leave from the day of the incident.
An FIR in this regard has also been lodged at the Nongpoh Police Station by the authorities and the investigation to nab the miscreant is on.
Asked, the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) of Ri Bhoi, M Mawrie informed that the incident has brought a sense of deep fear among the employees of the CHC and similar incident had also happened in the past.
The DM&HO also informed that officials of the Health department had visited the nurse after the incident.
He urged the police to nab the miscreant at the earliest and asked the Village Defence Party (VDP) of Umden as well as the village authorities to be vigilant.
Mawrie also informed that police forces have been deployed for security at the health centre from the day of the incident.
Meanwhile, leaders of the Ri Bhoi Youth Development & Social Organization (RBYDSO), central body and Umden Circle have expressed concern over the incident and urged the authorities to take stringent action against the miscreant.
The organisation will convene a meeting with the headmen of the villages in Umden to discuss ways and means to prevent such incidents.
