Mawkyrwat: A one-day workshop on National Bamboo was organised by the office of the Divisional Soil & Water Conservation Officer, Mawkyrwat at Tynnai village, Mawkyrwat, on Wednesday.
South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo, who was the chief guest, said that cane and bamboo craft is not a new thing to Tynnai and, therefore, inspired them to utilise and hone their skills so that their products can fetch a good market. She also lauded their talents and innovative ideas in cane and bamboo craftsmanship. The DC encouraged them to improve their artistry with a hope that this cane and bamboo industrial co-operative, which is only a medium and small-scale industry, will serve as a primary occupation and a means of livelihood.
While lamenting the destruction of forests which led to the extinction of different species, Laloo called for preservation and conservation of bamboo which yields benefits, through which different products can be made.
She said that there are many areas that need to be done under this Bamboo Mission through various departments. She also advised the craftsmen to utilise their job cards under MNREGA schemes in buying seeds, community plantations etc.
She called for support and cooperation and how to find out ways and means to increase plantation and make it sustainable for future consumption.
