GUWAHATI: With mobile internet services remaining suspended in Assam for the last seven days, the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to lift the restriction in a phased manner.

The government has already lifted restriction on broadband internet service. Broadband services by all service provides have been resumed since 9 AM on Tuesday morning, while the ban on mobile internet services continues subject to review of the situation.

Taking up several petitions filed against the ban of internet services in wake of violence during anti-CAA protests in the state, a Division bench of the High Court asked the state government to consider lifting the ban in a phased manner.

The state government, in its submission before the Court, said the decision to suspend the mobile internet services was being reviewed on a daily basis, and depending on the situation, it will be lifted completely.

A number of separate petitions had been filed before the High Court by different persons, including journalists and lawyers, against the government’s move to suspend mobile internet services in 10 districts of the state since evening of December 11, when violence during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, had erupted in the state.
