SHILLONG: The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), which was believed to have been more or less neutralised, is now allegedly once again trying to recruit new cadres into their fold.
The Border Security Force has received inputs that the GNLA is not sitting quiet but trying its level best to recruit new cadres.
BSF DIG and PRO, UK Nayal, said that reports also suggest that the group is indulging in extortion especially in Tura area.
The GNLA had unleashed a reign of terror in Garo Hills for 7-8 years before it was finally neutralised when its chief Sohan D Shira was killed in a police encounter.
The GNLA insurgents have several cases of abduction, murder and extortion against them.
Talking about the cross-border movement of insurgent groups, Nayal also informed that as per their inputs, ‘chief of the staff’ of the ‘military wing’ of the Ulfa-I, Drishti Rajkhowa, is in Bangladesh and sometimes moves over to India.
Nayal said that Rajkhowa’s movement has also reduced after apprehension of Kaltush of GNLA.
Earlier, there were also unconfirmed reports of fresh attempts being made by the ‘splinter’ groups of GNLA to regain strength in association with Ulfa-Independent.
