15-day-old baby sustains burn injuries at Rajasthan hospital blaze
Jaipur: A 15-day-old baby sustained severe burn injuries after a fire broke out at the neonatal care unit of Alwar’s Geetanand Children hospital in Rajasthan due to a short circuit on Tuesday. Following the incident, the baby was later shifted to JK LON hospital in Jaipur. Sources said that none of the hospital staff was available at the site when the short circuit was reported. However, after noticing dense fumes emanating from the ward, the staff rushed to the site where the baby, who was being admitted to the hospital for the last one week, suffered burn injuries. Soon after the incident, 15 babies from the unit were later shifted to other wards. The baby girl’s relatives said that she was admitted to hospital after complaining of breathing problems. Around 5 a.m. in the morning, the family members were called by the hospital authorities under an emergency situation, where they found the child with burn injuries. Alwar Additional collector Uttam Singh Shekhawat confirmed that the baby sustained burn injuries. The incident comes at a time when the officials concerned are being criticised for their negligence into the deaths of 77 infants within a month in Kota. (IANS)
Mountaineer Poorna scales peak in Antarctica, eyes another
Hyderabad: Malavath Poorna, who has won laurels for scaling Mount Everest thereby becoming the youngest girl in the world to achieve the feat, has added another feather to her cap by conquering Mt. Vinson Massif, the Antarctica continents highest mountain peak (4,987 metres). “It was a sense of accomplishment beyond words for Poorna as she conquered Mt. Vinson Massif, the Antarctica continents highest mountain peak,” the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) said in a press release on Monday. Eighteen-year-old Poorna becomes the first and youngest tribal woman in the world to set foot on the six tallest mountain peaks across six continents, the release said. Poorna has so far scaled Mt. Everest(Asia, year 2014), Mt. Kilimanjaro (Africa, 2016), Mt.Elbrus (Europe, 2017), Mt. Aconcagua (South America, 2019) Mt. Cartsnez (Oceania region, 2019) and Mt. Vinson Massif (Antarctica, 2019), it said. She is close to achieving her goal of scaling the seven tallest summits located in seven continents. Poorna is gearing up to scale Mt. Denali (North Americas highest mountain peak), the dream of every mountaineer in the world, the release said. Poorna thanked Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Minister for Welfare Koppula Eshwar for being the messiahs of poor children in the state, it said. I wouldnt have achieved mountaineering feat, if not for the solid support of the chief minister Chandrasekhar Rao, the release quoted Poorna saying over a satellite phone. (PTI)
3rd unit of Kakrapar atomic reactor to be commissioned in April
New Delhi: The Department of Atomic Energy will commission one nuclear reactor every year from 2020, starting with the third unit of the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station in Gujarat, Union minister Jitendra Singh said. The 700-MW pressurised heavy water reactor is likely to be commissioned by April, Singh, who is a minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office, said in an interaction with reporters in New Delhi. “We will commission one nuclear reactor every year from 2020. Kakrapar-3 should be commissioned in 2020,” Singh said. A senior Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) official said the fourth unit of the power station would likely to be commissioned by 2021. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has 22 reactors. Shrikrishna Gupta, a senior DAE official, said the Tarapur Atomic Power Reactors — units 1 and 2 — completed 50 years of operation this year. The two boiling water reactors — the first in the country — were commissioned in October 1969. He said the Kaiga Power Station unit 1 also created a world record by operating for 941 days. (PTI)
Army helping local women learn pickle-making, culinary skills in J&K
Bhadarwah: Pickle-making is not something readily relatable to the Army, tasked with fighting militancy here, but as part of its social responsibility, it is helping 75 women learn it and other culinary skills to financially empower them. With the help of a 60-year-old local woman, an expert in making traditional Bhadarwahi pickle from ‘knol-khol’, garlic and ‘wild shingolay’, the Army-run Women Empowerment Centre is training women in various culinary skills, Col D D Pandey, the commanding officer of 4, Rashtriya Rifles. Aimed at providing an opportunity to village women to earn their livelihood and improve their household condition, the Army’s WEC started working from November 15, he said. “We have been training women from weaker section of the society in several trades including stitching, tailoring, knitting and information technology but traditional pickle-making of Bhadarwahi ‘knol-khol’, garlic and ‘wild shingolay’ has become an instant success. “We have already sold 180 kgs of pickle in a couple of days and we are flooded with orders. To meet the demand, we are increasing the working hours,” the Army officer told PTI. (PTI)
Indore cleanest city for 4th time
New Delhi: Indore was adjudged India’s cleanest city for the fourth time in a row in the central government’s cleanliness survey announced on Tuesday. Bhopal stood second in first quarter results (April to June), while Rajkot grabbed the second spot in second quarter results (July-September). The third position was grabbed by Surat in the first quarter and Navi Mumbai in the second quarter. (PTI)
