SHILLONG: North Garo Hills police is conducting an inquiry into the allegations that coal trucks which are plying through the district have to pay Rs 26000 to the government.
According to source, two FIRs were filed alleging that some people were collecting money from coal trucks. One FIR was withdrawn later, it was informed.
However, media reports say that allegations have surfaced that some civilians ‘aligned’ with the ruling party — National People’s Party are involved in the act of lawlessness by hijacking the role of the DMR and transport departments and collecting money from coal trucks leaving the twin departments completely redundant.
Police sources , however, said that the FIRs which have been received only mentioned about extortion taking place from coal trucks plying in the area and there were no allegations about people from any political party being involved in the alleged extortion.
