JOWAI: Bangladeshi miscreants, who intruded into Indian territory to commit robbery, attacked two locals on the National Highway Jowai-Amlarem-Dawki (JAD) road.
On Sunday, around 10 Bangladeshi miscreants came to JAD road near Darrang and they blocked the road with rocks and boulders to commit robbery.
Two youths, Remius Khonglah (23) and Tyngshain Khonglah (32)- both from Lamin village, were attacked with machete and other sharp weapons. They even destroyed the vehicle (Alto-800) in which they were travelling.
Sources informed that on Saturday, the wedding of elder sister of Remius was held and he had gone to Dawki along with Tyngshain to drop some relatives who had come to attend the wedding.
While returning from Dawki, they met a person (non-local) who warned them that they should not proceed as some miscreants had already blocked the road with rocks, stones and boulders.
After they were informed about the matter, the duo tried to contact their relatives but they could not reach out to the relatives. They decided to proceed but were attacked by the miscreants.
A doctor who came for the wedding was also attacked and his vehicle was pelted with stones and he decided to return to Lamin village to seek the help of the villagers.
The villagers decided to accompany the doctor but on reaching the spot, they saw a damaged vehicle which later the villagers recognised it to be the vehicle of the brother of the bride.
“We saw the vehicle was damaged and there was some blood inside the vehicle and we decided to search the area and later we found a neck tie, blood and also shoes of the victims”, said the headman of Lamin village.
“As we were familiar with the jungle, we searched for them and later, we found both the victims with injuries as they have been hit with a ‘dao’ on their legs, head and hands”, the headman said.
The Bangladeshis planned to kidnap them to Bangladesh.
One of the victims, who is fluent in Sylheti dialect, informed that the miscreants wanted to take them to Bangladesh and threatened to kill them by slitting their throats”, sources informed.
“We are not happy the way the Dawki police is behaving. They were equipped with guns. When we followed the victims and the miscreants, they left us all alone and they came only after we took both the victims to the health centre”, a concerned villager informed.
“We strongly condemn such action by the Dawki police. We need them to protect us but they left us all alone”, the headman said.
Another attack
On January 1, Khihlang Suchiang (18) and four others were proceeding from Huroi towards Dawki in West Jaintia Hills in one Bolero pick-up vehicle.
On reaching Amjalong Bhoi (WJH), a group of suspected Bangladeshi nationals armed with lethal weapons, waylaid their vehicle and assaulted Suchiang and looted Rs 8,000 from them.
As a result, Suchiang sustained injuries and was admitted at Woodland Hospital, Shillong.
It was further reported that the matter was not reported to the police.
