MAWKYRWAT: The Congress has claimed that five-time MLA and senior National Peoples’ Party (NPP) leader MM Danggo may rejoin the party and contest the upcoming KHADC bypoll from Ranikor constituency, South West Khasi Hills on a Congress ticket.
The seat is vacant since October last year following the death of MDC Nassar Marwein.
Youth organiser of the Congress Ranikor constituency, Vincent T Sangma claimed that Danggo had taken the decision during a public meeting held at Mawpyllun playground, Ranikor Civil Sub-Division in which all the leaders of primary units of the NPP from both upland and border areas were present.
“During the meeting, Danggo sought the opinion of the people on whether to remain with the NPP or join the Congress. The people present in the meeting suggested that he should return to the Congress and therefore he has publicly decided that he will rejoin the Congress,” Sangma said.
Sangma also claimed that after Danggo decided to join the Congress, all the leaders of the primary units of the NPP and the people attended the meeting were very happy and agreed to rejoin the Congress.
Sangma also said that Danggo has decided to leave the NPP and rejoin the Congress because he was ignored and did not get the respect from the NPP leaders as a senior politician.
“He told me that he did not get the respect as a senior politician from the NPP leaders especially Conrad Sangma (national president of the NPP),” Vincent Sangma claimed.
He also said that within this week, the president of the NPP Ranikor constituency, German Nongsiang along with other leaders at the constituency and district level will resign from the NPP and rejoin the Congress.
The Congress leader also claimed that Danggo had called the meeting at Mawpyllun playground because he wanted to contest the Ranikor bypoll on a Congress ticket.
He also claimed that Danggo recently met former chief minister and senior Congress leader Mukul Sangma before taking the decision.
However, Danggo was not available for comments.
