Imphal: Residents of Tungjoy village in Senapati district of Manipur ushered in New Year with the ‘Tungjoy Glory Day 2020’ festival by holding cultural and sports events.
Held at Tungjoy for two days, beginning Saturday, visitors flocked to the village to see the colourful cultural events.
Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh who inaugurated the event on Saturday said culture and tradition work as bridges between the past and the present.
He said the way of life of a community can be depicted through the culture and tradition of that particular community.
He added, “It is the way through which we can acknowledge how our forefathers spent their lives. By knowing such invaluable things we can follow their footnotes by preserving our aged long culture and traditions.”
Singh further said, “If we follow the right path shown by our forefathers, society can be developed and will be marching forward for a good future.”
Recalling the impact of modernisation on culture and tradition, Singh said, though modernisation is important it should not affect traditions.
“A balancing approach is needed to preserve our traditions and also to avail the benefits of modernisation in our lives.”
Regarding the issue of a land dispute between Tungjoy village with bordering Nagaland, the deputy chief minister said all-out efforts will be made to settle the issue.
“The state cabinet has already discussed on the issue and it will be settled as soon as possible,” he said.
He said he will approach the concerned ministers regarding up-gradation of the primary health sub-centre to health centre and construction of a community hall at Tungjoy at the earliest.
PHE Minister Losi Dikho said all are very much impressed by the commitment and dedication shown by the people of Tungjoy village.
He said it is one of the oldest historical villages in Senapati district. “There has been a good work culture among the people of the village giving them socio-economic prosperity for the last many decades.”
The minister added that the state government is committed to the welfare of people even in the interior hilly areas.
“Almost all the villages in Mao Assembly constituency have been given safe drinking water supply. Inter-village roads have been developed and blacktopping of village roads are in progress,” he added.
The event concluded on Sunday evening with a presentation of dances and songs by various artistes. (UNI)
