HYC protests against poor condition

NONGSTOIN: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Maweit Circle has decided to forbid loaded trucks from plying on Nongstoin – Maweit road in protest against the PWD for ignoring the bad road condition in the area.
The shutdown of trucks carrying charcoal, coal and timber will come into effect from Wednesday.
Jerimia Dkhar, president of HYC Maweit Circle, told mediapersons that Maweit area dishes out crores of rupees in revenue to the state government, but for five decades it has paid little attention.
He also said that the people of Maweit have been fooled for a very long time and the false promises from every politician and legislator of the state made them to take such decision.
Dkhar also said that hundreds of memoranda and reminders have been submitted to various chief ministers, PWD ministers and local MLAs but nobody took the issue seriously.
The organisation also reminded that during the last meeting with the PWD Minister, Prestone Tynsong, he assured that a consultant committee will be constituted to complete the DPR in 2019. “The minister also assured that the department will fund the repair of the Nongstoin-Maweit road before the construction of the two-laning road from Nongstoin-Maweit till Kulang, Nongjri, a distance of 75 kms, but till date no fund has been sanctioned even for the repairing,” Dkhar said.
The organisation said that in Shallang and Jowai the coal trading hub has good road connectivity whereas Maweit road has turned from bad to worse.
“We call for the cooperation of all the people especially all the businessmen in Maweit and request them to be patient and support us on the issue,” Dkhar said. The road shut-down will commence with a dharna at Maweit at 9 am on Wednesday.
