NONGSTOIN: The ban on all loaded trucks plying from Nongstoin-Maweit w.e.f Wednesday was successful after the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Maweit Circle, called an agitation in protest against the PWD and the state government for not taking any measures against the deplorable road conditions in the area.
HYC president, Maweit Circle, Jerimia Dkhar said that the indefinite ban will continue until the state government responds to the demand of the council to repair the road.
The HYC also organised a sit-in demonstration to protest against the government’s delay in repairing the dilapidated road, which has remained unattended for more than five decades.
The headmen of Maweit area and the villagers had earlier warned the HYC members against holding any agitation within Maweit village, and after a long debate, the HYC members moved to Umiong Bridge, 4 km away from Maweit, and continued their agitation.
The HYC president said that the non-cooperation of headmen and locals in Maweit will not weaken the issue, adding that they will prove that all the headmen and villagers in Maweit have no responsibility over the issue.
Expressing grief, Dkhar said that because of the poor road conditions, many pregnant women and people, who need immediate medical attention, had lost their lives before reaching Nongstoin.
“Maweit people have been fooled for a very long time and the false promise from every politician and legislators of the state prompted us to take such a decision to ban all the loaded trucks plying from Nongstoin-Maweit,” he said.
The Council also said that during the last meeting with the PWD Minister Prestone Tynsong, the latter assured that a Consultant Committee will be constituted to complete the DPR in 2019.
“Tynsong also assured that the Department will fund the repairing of the road from Nongstoin-Maweit before the construction of two-lane road from Nongstoin-Maweit till Kulang, Nongjri with a distance of 75 km but, till date, there is no sanction even for the repairing,” the Council said.
