Abducted labourer released
TURA: A labourer working for a private construction firm who was abducted by a criminal gang from a road project at Masighat in South Garo Hills has reportedly been released after the family paid ransom. Labourer Saidul Islam was kidnapped from the firm’s labour camp a week ago and despite search attempts police were unable to trace him out. It is reported that the victim was released early this week after the family allegedly paid ransom to the criminal gang. He hailed from Mankachar in Assam. Meanwhile, police from South Garo Hills have arrested two persons who they claim are part of the gang behind the labourer’s kidnapping. The duo was taken into custody from Gittingbibra village of the district. One of the arrested men identified as Rongbang Sangma has a case of attempted murder against him.

Demand for books in SSA schools
NONGSTOIN: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) Nongstoin circle, in a meeting with the district coordinator of SSA, Nongstoin, on Thursday, demanded to speed up the supply of SSA books to all the SSA schools in Nongstoin. The organisation, led by its president Khlainbor Thongni and others, urged the district coordinator to supply the books in time or before the schools reopen. Khlainbor Thongni informed that a complaint was lodged by one of the parents of the students studying in an SSA school alleging that the school books were not issued in time and sometimes they were issued right before the half-yearly examination. “Such practices are unacceptable. The SSA office will have to look in to the matter so that it will not repeat in the future,” Thongni said. The HANM will follow up the matter and urge the concerned authority to take up the issue as top priority, Thongni further informed.

Netaji’s 123rd birth anniversary
SHILLONG: The Greater Shillong Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Birthday Celebration Committee (GSNSCBBCC) will celebrate and observe the 123rd birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose here on January 23. The committee will organise a number of activities including paying homage, floral tributes, etc., at the statue of Netaji in the premises of U SosoTham Auditorium. The organisers have requested the people to join them at the venue for the programme which will start from 8 am followed by lighting of candles at 5 pm.

CRPF recruitment campaign
SHILLONG: The 67 Bn CRPF based at Polo conducted recruitment awareness campaign for 36 vacancies for the post of Constable (Tradesmen/Technical) in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Thursday. Sunit Varshney, Commandant, Sh TP Singh, Dy. Commandant along with others carried out awareness campaign on recruitment among local youths at Lumdaitkhla & Nongrah village under Umroi PS on Thursday.

Drill on earthquake preparedness
Nongpoh: A one-day mock drill on earthquake & fire preparedness was organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Nongpoh in collaboration with the office of the District Medical & Health Officer, Ri Bhoi and Civil Hospital, in Civil Hospital, Nongpoh on Thursday. During the drill, participants were given training on response and rescue operations to be adopted during disasters. The mock drill was being carried with an aim to equip the staff of the hospital to cope in times of crisis which may occur due to natural forces like earthquake and fire. Doctors, nurses, Civil Hospital staff, Nongpoh, Meghalaya Home Guards, Fire and Emergency Service, Meghalaya Civil Defence and students from Ri Bhoi College and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan participated in the training programme. DP Kharsati, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi & CEO of DDMA and G Mihsil, Superintendent of Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, K Wanniang of DDMA and other officials were also present.
