Man gets ten year jail for rape
Agartala: A special court of West Tripura on Tuesday sentenced a middle aged man 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl of Dukli area of Agartala. The incident on a minor by her neighbour Paritosh Sen was reported at West Agartala women police station on June 9, 2016. Based on the complaint by the father of the victim, police had lodged the FIR under section 448, 376 (2) (1) of IPC and section 6 of the under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and police was managed to arrest accused. The police had filed the charge-sheet at the court of special judge of POCSO of West Tripura district last year. After detail hearing and all evidences, the special judge Govinda Das awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment to Sen and slapped the fine of Rs 25,000 for offence under section 6 of the POCSO Act. In default of payment of fine, the convict shall suffer simple imprisonment for another six months. (UNI)


Mizoram Guv wants AIIMS-like institute, IIT, IIM in state
Aizawl: Mizoram Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai has urged the Centre to establish an AIIMS-like medical institute, an IIT and an IIM in the state, an official release said on Tuesday. Sreedharan made the request during his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at New Delhi last week, it said. He also urged Shah to take steps to construct a road connecting Lawngtlai in south Mizoram with Bangladesh capital Dhaka and widen NH-306 (formerly 54) — that connects the state with Assam’s Silchar — to four lanes, the release said. The governor also raised issues of border fencing with Bangladesh and expansion of Lengpui airport, it said. Mizoram shares a 318 km border with Bangladesh, of which 233 km is yet to be fenced, sources said. Shah and Pillai also discussed security measures along the India-Myanmar border and setting up of an international trade centre at Zochachhuah village in Lawngtlai district, the release added. Assam CM tells students to use time judiciously
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday urged youths to realise their potential and commit themselves to the development of society. Value-based services are of utmost importance in today’s world and working for only individual success does not give much satisfaction, Sonowal said at the concluding ceremony of the three-day Chief Minister’s Youth Conclave. “Youths must strive to equip themselves with required skills, knowledge through education and hardwork to achieve excellence. Students should judiciously utilise time and not get distracted in pursuit of a successful life,” he said. The state government is committed to making northeast the new engine of growth for the country and capture the market in Southeast Asian countries through the Act East Policy, he added. (PTI)


Two arrested for running drugs manufacturing units in Manipur
Imphal: Two persons were arrested for running drugs manufacturing units in a three-day-long operation in Manipur’s Thoubal district, police said on Tuesday. W Tomba Singh was arrested from his residence in the Arapti Mayai area of the district on Monday, and a 9mm pistol along with a magazine was seized from him, said superintendent of police S Ibomcha Singh. Singh and his associates had been running a heroin- brown sugar manufacturing unit at his residence for the last seven-eight months, but due to fear of police raids, they had hidden the equipment, chemicals and other items used in the manufacturing at a nearby pigsty, officials said. Singh’s arrest came after notorious drugs kingpin Md Abbas Ahmed was held from a hideout in Kwakta in Bishnupur district on Friday. A stolen car and a motorcycle were also seized. Another vehicle, used for transportation of the drugs, was also seized, the officer said. Police had arrested two of their associates last week. Officials said they are further investigating the matter. (PTI)


Efforts on to make Tripura model state: Chief Minister
Agartala: Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday said a lot remained to be done to address the developmental challenges, but efforts were on to make Tripura a model state. Deb, on the occasion of Tripura’s 48th Statehood Day, said his government would strive hard to make the state economically self-reliant. “Tripura had attained statehood on Jan 21, 1972, but we are yet to fulfill many aspirations of people. We strive to make Tripura a model state in the country in terms of development,” Deb said on the occasion. Since the BJP-IPFT dispensation came to power 23 months ago, revenue collections have increased 26% from 8.9 %, the state achieved 100 per cent electrification and eradicated malaria, Deb said, enlisting his government’s accomplishments. The state, in an attempt to ensure transparency, introduced e-tendering system for procuring goods and services and distributed gas cylinders to at least 91 per cent of the households, as part of the Centre’s Ujjwala Yojana, the chief minister claimed. The CM also said that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 8000 crore for widening of National Highways in the state, the work for which is underway. (PTI)
