At a time like this where competition is high, students are competing to get into the best colleges and universities. It reminds me of Charles Darwin’s theory, “Survival of the Fittest,” turned into a popular phrase by Herbert Spencer. The point I wish to make here pertains to our students in Shillong.
We have the best institutions in the country right here from Medical Science to Engineering, Arts and Science, Humanities and as well as Foreign Languages. We have it all. To mention one University which has been here since 1973 is the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) formerly known as Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL).
This is not a private university as so many tend to misunderstand. It’s a Central University Established by an Act of Parliament and is of national importance. It is also one of the elite institutions in the country where the permanent campus is in Telangana, Hyderabad and it’s satellite campuses in Lucknow and Shillong. And mind you, the Shillong campus is of high calibre having the best teaching faculties.
Many from around the country throng to get their admissions here, but sad to see, we barely have our own students from Meghalaya studying here! I was a student of this University, and during our times too, there were just a few of us studying here!
Students across the country study in this University! EFLU offers different courses in English in many specialisations viz. English Literature, English Language Teaching (ELT) , Linguistics, Journalism and Mass Media, right from under-graduate to PhD level. It also offers foreign languages like German, French, Russian, Spanish is being taught here!
I’m writing this letter to inform other young people about this University located in the premises of North Eastern Hill University. Its permanent campus is coming up soon in Umsawli. There are entrance exams conducted every year which are published in national as well as local newspapers. So I urge parents and young minds to acquaint themselves with this University and I hope this article will enlighten many! The students of this University are doing very well in their careers and lives. As an alumni I can proudly say that all those who have passed out from EFLU are leaders in every field!
