SHILLONG: Three shops in Phulbari area of West Garo Hills were completely gutted in a fire on Saturday morning. The fire was reported at 5.45 am at Bhaitbari Market. Police said the fire occurred allegedly due to the negligence of a stall owner who kept the firewood burning overnight which further spread to the other three shops. Fire service reached the spot on time and stopped the fire from spreading further. It was also learnt that despite reaching the spot on time, miscreants manhandled the fire truck driver. Necessary legal action would be taken against them, an official said. Meanwhile, Rajabala MLA, Azad Zaman, has asked the state government to grant compensation to the victims who have lost their shops in the incident.
