TURA: North Garo Hills Police have successfully rescued a kidnapped victim and arrested the kingpin of the gang behind the abduction from a remote village in the district on Monday.
Acting on inputs, police teams raided Raja Apal village under Bajengdoba police station jurisdiction and rescued the Assam citizen, Rahim Manuar Ali, from a house in the village.
They also nabbed the gang kingpin behind the abduction along with another criminal.
The arrested gang leader identified as Rupen Togan R Marak is a habitual offender with a history of criminal antecedents. He was released from jail barely two weeks ago after serving time for over a year in another criminal case.
Money amounting to several thousand rupees that had been paid as ransom by the victim’s family was also recovered from the house along with three country-made rifles which had been used by the gang to commit the crime.
Two other members of the same gang are currently absconding.
The kidnappers had targeted a passing mini-truck coming from Assam and driven by Rahim, which was ferrying chickens to the Tura market at a secluded spot in Dinggok around 2 o’clock in the night.
They took away Rahim and released the vehicle with the other occupants to carry on their journey to Tura.
