Woman lecturer critical after lover sets her afire
Wardha (Maharashtra): In a shocking incident, a jilted lover attempted to murder a young college lecturer by dousing her with petrol in full public view in Maharashtra’s Wardha, police said here on Monday. The incident happened this morning in Hinganghat town around 7 a.m. when the victim stepped out of a bus at Nanderi Chowk, to proceed to her college, around 100 metres away, said Investigating Officer Pratibha Dudhbale. “We have detained the accused Vicky Nagrale and are questioning him. He and the victim belong to the same village, Daroda. The victim was working as a part-time lecturer with Matoshri Ashatai Kunawar College,” Wardha Superintendent of Police Basavaraj Teli told IANS. According to police, the woman has sustained more than 40 per cent burns, her face has been totally scarred, besides her chest and back, and medicos fear she may lose her vision if she survives. After initial treatment at the local Hinganghat Hospital, she was rushed to Orange City Hospital in Nagpur this afternoon. The Maharashtra Police has sought a detailed report on the incident. ‘Drunk’ BJP corporator caught dancing on camera
Surat: In an embarrassment for the ruling BJP in “dry” Gujarat, one of its corporator from Surat was captured on camera while purportedly dancing in an inebriated condition. With the video of the corporator, Piyush Shivshaktiwala, going viral on social media, the party has issued a show-cause notice to him, Surat BJP president Nitin Bhajiyawala said on Monday. Shivshaktiwala represents Sagrampura municipal ward in the Surat Municipal Corporation. The undated video was shot on a mobile phone at a farm house in coastal Nagrol village in neighbouring Valsad district. “A show cause notice has been issued to Shivshaktiwala. The city unit will also demand his suspension from the party,” said Bhajiyawala. Manufacture, storage, sale and consumption of liquor is prohibited in Gujarat. The corporator was allegedly enjoying a party with a group of people at the farm house. Meanwhile, Shivshaktiwala on Monday denied that he had consumed liquor at the party. He said a bottle shown in the video contained fruit juice. “I have a liquor permit which was granted to me on a health ground. I danced at the party but did not consume liquor. Dancing is not a crime. I will issue a clarification to the party about this. The bottle had no liquor but fruit juice in it,” he told reporters. (PTI)


Man shoots son over property
Akola: A man on Monday shot dead his son when the latter came to him armed with a firearm to discuss a property dispute the two were embroiled in, said police in Maharashtra’s Akola. An official identified the accused as Baba Bharti, a local politician, and the victim as his son Manish. “Manish came to his father’s house on Monday morning armed with a firearm saying he needed to speak over the property dispute the two were having. However, Baba Bharti took out a revolver and shot dead Manish when the latter came charging at him while the two were arguing,” he said. Bharti has been arrested and police teams were at the spot in Jatharpeth Square area to probe further, he added. (PTI)


WB govt provides thermal scanners
Kolkata: The West Bengal government has provided two thermal scanners to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here to help the authorities conduct surveillance on passengers to contain attack of coronavirus, a senior official said on Monday. The West Bengal Medical Service Corporation has bought the two thermal scanners at a total cost of Rs 30 lakhs and handed it over to the city airport authorities on Sunday, he said. The Kolkata Port authorities have already started using thermal scanners to identify passengers with symptoms of coronavirus, who are arriving at the city using waterways. Eight passengers, who had travelled in the same flight as that of a coronavirus-affected Kerala resident, had landed at the city airport on January 23. The state health department has traced the eight passengers three from China, one each from New Delhi and Odisha while three are from West Bengal. (PTI)


Delhi-bound trains delayed due to fog
New Delhi: At least 13 Delhi-bound trains were delayed by up to 4 hours due to fog in several parts of northern india, officials said on Monday. According to northern railway officials, Gaya-New Delhi Mahabodhi Express was delayed by 4 hours, followed by Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Express running behind its schedule by 3 hours. Even Singrauli-Hazrat Nizamuddin Express was delayed by 2 hours and 30 minutes, Amritsar-Nanded Sachkhand Express delayed by 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Vasco-Hazrat Nizamuddin Goa Express and Bhagalpur-Anand Vihar Vikramshila Express were delayed by 1 hour and 30 minutes and Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express was delayed by 1 hour. On Sunday, 15 Delhi-bound trains were delayed due to fog in several parts of northern India. (IANS)


4 arrested in Kashmir for terror links
Srinagar: J&K Police have arrested four people linked to proscribed terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed at Awantipora in south Kashmir. They have been identified as Mohd Amin, Mohd Rafiq and Fayaz Lone, residents of Pulwama, and Maqbool Dar, a resident of Awantipora. As per police records they were involved in assisting JeM terrorists operating in areas around Awantipora. They were providing logistic support and shelter to the terrorists, including JeM commander Qari Yasir and his other terror associates who were recently killed in an encounter at Awantipora.”Cases under relevant sections of law are registered at respective police stations and further investigation in the matter is in progress,” a police statement said. Police is also investigating the role of four other persons for their involvement in supporting terror activities in the area and aiding terrorists in the area. (IANS)
