Sonapur College holds N.E. India Inter College Debating Competition
GUWAHATI: “The future of India’s higher education looks bright but not spectacular and still awaits a firm and clear policy for implementation,” said Prof. David Reid Syiemlieh, former Chairperson of UPSC and Former VC of Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, while delivering the inaugural speech as the Speaker of the house of the North East India Inter College Debating Competition-2019-20 being organised by Sonapur College of Kamrup (M) district on Wednesday at its premises.
However, the vision and ideal of higher education should not get lost in the sheer scale of the issues being raised for policy and clarity on the subject, he said. The topic of the debate was, in the opinion of the house- “Frequent experiments and policy changes in Indian Education Scenario have actually created problems than solutions”.
Altogether twenty-nine participants from fifteen colleges and universities from the region took part in the competition. The winners in the individual and the team category were awarded with Sinam Uriba Singh Memorial prizes which were sponsored by Sinam Iboton Singh, a faculty member of Mathematics of the college. Accordingly, Moon Talukdar of Gauhati University, was adjudged as the Best Debater and he won a cash prize of Rs 10, 000 and a trophy, while Nabarun Kashyap of Nalbari College begged the second best debater award. She won a cash prize of Rs 7,000 and a trophy.
On the other hand, Arnab Jyoti Talukdar of Nalbari College got the third prize and won Rs. 5,000 and a trophy. Similarly, the Nalbari College and Cotton University begged the best and the second best Team of the event and were awarded with cash prizes of Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively, besides trophies. The prizes were distributed by the Speaker of the House Prof. David Reid Syiemlieh, Principal of the College Dr. Devabrot Khanikor and the judges.
The judges of the competition were Dr. Bidula Sarma, Assistant Professor of M Ed Classes, Department of Education, Gauhati University, Manish Goswami, Assistant Editor, The Assam Tribune and Ms. Kankona Goswami, Assistant Editor, North East News and Senior Anchor, Prag News.
Earlier in the beginning, the Principal of the college Dr. Devabrot Khanikor gave his welcome address. Before the commencement of the competition, rich floral tribute was offered along with lighting of lamp in the portrait of Sinam Uriba Singh, in whose memory the prizes are dedicated, by the Speaker and other dignitaries.
