GUWAHATI: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has sought the intervention of the Meghalaya sports commissioner on the issue of wage payment to casual employees of the State Sports Council under the Meghalaya Casual Worker Scheme, 1996.
In a letter to the sports commissioner, KHNAM state youth wing president, Thomas Passah, and KHNAM state youth wing secretary, F Marpna, informed that through an RTI, it was found out that the casual employees of the State Sports Council (Polo) were being paid daily wages below the amount notified by the state labour department.
“A complaint was also submitted to the state commissioner of labour against such violation of the labour law. As per the inquiry report of the field officer, the office of the labour commissioner has instructed the chief engineer, State Sports Council, to observe the labour laws accordingly, with special emphasis on the payment of minimum wages as per the latest notified rate,” the letter stated.
The party office-bearers informed that office of the State Sports Council has not acted upon the instruction issued by the labour commissioner and the employees are being forced to run from post to pillar for their rightful wages.
“The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement strongly oppose such unjust attitude of the council against their employees and against such adamant attitude towards government instructions and request your kind office to initiate necessary direction on the same,” the letter to the sports commissioner said.
