NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Student’s Union (KSU), Mawshynrut Circle, led by its president Armstrong Sohshang and general secretary, Ulysis Ryntong, along with other members, dismantled the ‘illegal’ toll gate at Mawgru in Langdongdai under West Khasi Hills on Tuesday.
Speaking with the media on Wednesday, Sohshang said that the illegal toll gate was installed by some NGOs based in Garo Hills without the permission from the Nonglang Sirdarship or from the headman of Mawgru village.
The union learned that the toll gate was set up for collection from trucks carrying agricultural products and others.
The KSU members, before dismantling the toll gate, met the Sirdar of Nonglang as well as the headman of Mawgru and learned that they have no knowledge about the installation of the gate within the Hima.
The KSU also alleged that some police personnel are also involved in setting up of the toll gate.
The union said that during the day, the police personnel from East Garo Hills wear civilian dress whereas at night they wear their uniform, fully armed, guarding the illegal toll gate.
The KSU suspected that the toll gate is not only for illegal collection but their intension was to encroach in the land in Khasi Hills to fulfill the demand of greater Garo land.
