MAWKYRWAT: The Khasi Student’s Union (KSU), South West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday, slammed the state government for not sanctioning additional post at Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat, which is the only college in the district. The union said that it is unacceptable and the government was being bias.
The assistant education secretary of the union, Pulljohn Wanniang, said, “The decision of the state government to not sanction additional posts, both teaching and non-teaching staff at Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat, unlike other colleges in different parts of the state, was an insult and an act of step-motherly treatment towards the people of the district”.
“It clearly shows that the government does not care for the students and the youths of the district,” Wanniang said.
He added that that the union has nothing to say about the decision of the government to create more posts in other colleges, but it should not forget Sngap Syiem College because it is the only college that provides education to the youths of the district, especially those who come from far-flung areas and from poor families.
Wanniang stated that since 2014, the union had raised the issue about the problems of the students and youths of the district by submitting memorandums to different education ministers and also to Shillong MP, Vincent Pala and even to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, only to go all in vain.
The Union urged the MLAs from the district to put pressure on the state government to sanction additional posts at Sngap Syiem College and to explain to the people as to why the government is step-motherly towards the district.
“As public representatives from the district supporting the government, if they have responsibility, they should do something about this biasness,” he said.
Wanniang added that the union will meet soon and discuss about the unfair treatment by the state government.
It may be mentioned that the Cabinet had on Tuesday sanctioned 43 posts in Nongstoin College, 31 in Ri Bhoi College, 26 in Shangpung College, 26 in Tirot Sing College, 31 in Jaintia Eastern College, 32 in Tura Christian College, 28 in Chokpot College, 33 in Ampati College and 40 in Nongtalang College.
