MAWKYRWAT: Ahead of the Langrin MDC bye-election, the United Democratic Party (UDP) received a major boost after more than 100 people, including leaders from the Congress, NPP and BJP, joined the party in the general meeting held at Mondeng Football Field, Nongnah on Saturday.
The 108 newcomers, who include former MLA MM Danggo, NPP ticket aspirant Skingford Nongbri, president of the BJP Ranikor Mandal Dliwell Marwein and Congess leader Harless Thongni, were welcomed to the party by the UDP president and Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh in the presence of Education Minister and UDP leader Lahkmen Rymbui, secretary of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) and HSPDP MLA Renikton L Tongkhar, associate member of the UDP Samuel Sangma, Ranikor MLA and UDP candidate Pius Marwein, president of UDP Ranikor Circle GG Bung Sanitang and other UDP leaders.
In his address, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh lamented the demise of Nassar Marwein, UDP MDC from Langrin Constituency stating that it has brought instability in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
While calling upon the leaders of various primary units of the UDP to work hard in strengthening the party, Lyngdoh said, “This bye-election is very crucial and we need to emerge victorious in order to bring stability within the district council”.
He further expressed happiness that the decision to put Pius Marwein as the candidate for upcoming Langrin MDC bye-election was not of the candidate and leaders of the circle, but a choice of all the party workers.
Lahkmen Rymbui called upon the people of Langrin Constituency to elect the MDC wisely and choose one with strong principles who will not jump from one party to another.
“We have seen many draconian laws and therefore we need to have MDCs with strong principles and we see such traits in Marwein, who will bring stability to the council,” Rymbui said, adding that the people of Langrin and the RDA have full faith in Marwein that he will win the election.
HSPDP MLA Renikton L Tongkhar urged upon the leaders of various primary units of the UDP Ranikor Circle to work hard and not to underestimate the opponents as elections are always tough.
“The moment you feel strong and start showing your might or refrain from work because you feel that you will win easily, that is the moment when you weaken the party and eventually fail. Therefore, even though we are strong and confident of winning this election, we should continue to work hard till the day of the poll,” Tongkhar said.
