Vaiphei takes charge as new MHRC chairperson

SHILLONG: Retired chief justice of Tripura High Court T. Vaiphei, assumed charge as chairperson of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC).
The acting chairperson, PJP Hanaman, member (Judicial) Baffyndalyne Giri, officials and staff of the commission were present when he took charge on Friday.
With his appointment, the MHRC, established in July 2016, has become a full-fledged commission.
Earlier, the commission had functioned with only a chairperson — Justice (retd) Aftab H. Saikia and Hanaman as the lone member.
Vaiphei was born on March 1, 1956. After graduation in 1976, he passed LLB in 1979 from Faculty of Law, University of Delhi.
He enrolled in the Bar Council of Assam in 1980 and in 1999 he was appointed the Additional Advocate General of Mizoram. He was elevated as Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court in 2003.
Vaiphei was appointed the chief justice of Tripura High Court in September 2016. After his retirement in 2018, he was appointed the chairperson of Assam Human Rights Commission.
