First wife gatecrashes hubby’s 3rd wedding in Pakistan; thrashes him
Karachi: A Pakistani man was rescued by the police after his first wife gatecrashed his third wedding and brutally thrashed him and tore up his clothes in front of guests here, a media report said on Wednesday.
Madiha and her relatives barged into the wedding reception venue of Asif Rafiq in Karachi’s Sakhi Hassan Chowrangi area on Monday night and claimed that was married to him in 2014, The Express Tribune reported.
She claimed that Rafiq had married another woman, a Jinnah University employee, without her consent and apologised to her after she objected to his second marriage, promising to stay only with her, the report said.
Madiha and her family brutally thrashed Rafiq during the reception and tore his clothes, the report said, adding that the police also beat him up after detaining him.
Rafiq tried to escape from the police station but was chased by Madiha’s family, forcing him to hide under a parked bus.
He was caught and beaten up again before being rescued by some people, it said.
According to Rafiq, he had divorced Madiha and therefore does not require anyone’s permission to remarry, saying: “It is my right to marry four women at the same time”.
Meanwhile, the police asked Madiha and Rafiq to approach the court as it was a civil dispute.
The police will register a case over the thrashing of Rafiq after a medical examination, the report added. (PTI)

Man threatens to torch himself after virus cancels birthday
Beijing: A man in southwest China doused himself with petrol and tied firecrackers around his waist because authorities cancelled his birthday banquet as a precaution against spreading the coronavirus.
The Chongqing resident, a 59-year-old surnamed Wang, had planned to hold a banquet with 10 tables late last month, state news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday.
But with authorities across China restricting public gatherings to contain the outbreak, officials told Wang to cancel the party.
Hundreds of millions of people across China face restrictions and interruptions to their lives due to efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak.
Beijing’s municipal authorities announced last week that parties and group dinners at restaurants would be temporarily forbidden in the Chinese capital to prevent the spread of the virus.
After his party was cancelled, the Chongqing man showed up at a village committee office armed with firecrackers, which he tied around his waist, Xinhua said.
He also poured gasoline on his chest and held out a lighter in an attempt to “scare and threaten the village committee into allowing the birthday party”.
Local procurators filed charges of disorderly behaviour against Wang on Tuesday, Xinhua reported. (AFP)

Guinness: Japanese, who believes in smiling, is oldest man
Tokyo: A Japanese man with a sweet tooth who believes in smiles has become the world’s oldest male at 112 years and 344 days old, according to Guinness World Records.
Chitetsu Watanabe, who was born in Niigata in northern Japan in 1907, received a certificate for his accomplishment on Wednesday at a nursing home in the city. The previous record holder, Masazo Nonaka, another Japanese, died last month.
The oldest living person is also Japanese, Kane Tanaka, a 117-year-old woman.
Until about a decade ago, Watanabe used to do bonsai, the Japanese traditional art of raising small sculpted trees, and had his work exhibited. These days, he loves desserts such as custards and cream puffs, Guinness said.
Watanabe graduated from agricultural school and then moved to Taiwan to work at Dai-Nippon Meiji Sugar on sugar cane plantation contracts. He lived in Taiwan for 18 years. He married Mitsue and they had five children, Guinness said in a statement.
After the end of World War II, Watanabe returned to Niigata and worked for the prefectural government until retirement. He also grew fruit and vegetables on the family farm. Asked about the secret to longevity, Watanabe has this advice: Don’t get angry and keep smiling. (AP)
