SHILLONG: A traffic police constable on Tuesday said that it not possible to stop cars and allow pedestrians to cross the road even while they stand at Zebra crossing, as the Rilbong point is four-lane.
This reporter enquired from the traffic personnel as to why the latter did not stop the cars, to which he replied, “It is not possible to stop cars because it is a four-lane road. You should know that.”
On Tuesday evening around 6 pm, pedestrians, who stood at a Zebra crossing hoping to cross to other side of the road (towards Rilbong), were made to stand at the zebra crossing as the traffic personnel on duty was unmindful of pedestrians.
It is not understood as to how Rilbong Point was converted into a four-lane road? It is also not understood as to how and why traffic personnel are ignorant of zebra crossings? The black-and-white stripes allow pedestrians to cross the road safely and cars are to stop and allow pedestrians to cross the road.
