SHILLONG: Rivers Umshyrpi and Wahumkhrah are on the list of country’s most polluted rivers, informed chairman of the Committee on Environment of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly SK Sunn.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, he said, “We have asked the state government to take up measures to clean up the river and resort to long term, medium term and short term solution. The nodal department is Forest and Environment department.”
Sunn said that the committee has given a direction to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Commissioner and Secretary to direct a team to inspect the pollution at Umshypri.
The officers from Urban Affairs department, Shillong Municipal Board, Central Pollution Control Board and CEO of Shillong Cantonment Board have inspected the site on Thursday.
Sunn said that the committee will examine the report and call a meeting on February 27 or 28.
After discussing about the report, the officials of the Cantonment Board and the Indian Air Force will be called to address the pollution of Elephant Falls.
He also expressed concern about the huge garbage waste at Barapani and said that the pollution at Barapani ‘is too much’.
The short term solution is to clean up the river and the long term solution is to educate the people residing in and around the river tributaries of Wah Umkhrah and Umshyrpi to not continue throwing garbage into the rivers.
