SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) said that in their inspection, they claimed to have found rampant illegal cattle smuggling at Upper Shillong as these vehicles are likely to be on their way to border areas to smuggle cattle there.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, secretary of HNYF Shillong Region, Faster Kharmujai said that they found more than 100 vehicles transporting cattle from 10 pm onwards. The drivers were not able to answer any queries as to where they were taking the cattle.
Stating that the vehicles were sent back and not allowed to go any further, he said that they did not hand the illegal cattle smugglers to the law enforcement as they “do not trust the law enforcers”.
He added that despite having many outposts, rampant cattle smuggling is still on.
The HNYF claimed that the drivers do not have any challan with them also. Kharmujai said, “If the Police department takes serious initiative to stop (the cattle smuggling), there will not be any problem”.
The next plan of action for HNYF is to take the Police along with the Veterinary and Health departments to conduct a joint checking.
