State celebrates Natl Science Day

SHILLONG/TURA: As many as eight schools from across the state took part in the National Science Day organised at the ICAR (RC) for NEH region, Umiam.
The two-day event packed with quiz competition for school children, impromptu lecture competition, memorial lectures and special competition on Idea Challenge were among the attractions.
Kick starting the programme Dr. BK Kandpal, Director, ICAR (RC) delivered a lecture on the importance of science in society and our day to day life. The lecture was followed by a lively interactive session with the school children moderated by Dr. G. Kadirvel, Principal Scientist & Organising Secretary of National Science Day and Dr. A.A.P. Milton, Scientist & Co- Organising Secretary. Sir C.V. Raman memorial lecture on ‘Mitigating Human Elephant Conflict’ was delivered by renowned elephant expert Padmashree Dr. K. K. Sarma.
In his address Dr. Sarma underlined the need for conservation of elephant and their ecosystem for future of our planet. Dr. PLN Raju, Director, North Eastern Space Application Centre, Umiam delivered National Science Day Special Lecture on ‘Space, Science and Beyond’ highlighting the need for innovation and efforts for igniting the young minds.
The day progressed with distribution of prizes for various competitions to the winners and participating school children. The event ended with vote of thanks from Dr. G. Kadirvel with the promise to foster and nurture science in the coming years too.
Sankardev College held a Popular Talk on ‘Raman Effect’ delivered by and was followed by Prof. K Ismail, Retired Professor, Department of Chemistry, NEHU. Inter-College Science Quiz competition was organised where Lady Keane College emerged as the winners while Shillong College was the runners-up.
The programme was jointly organised by the Departments of Physics and Chemistry of the College in collaboration with the IQAC.
Meanwhile, the National Science Day was celebrated at the Don Bosco College in Garo Hills.
Alongside an inaugural event, a technical session was held on various important aspects relating to science.
Programmes including a science exhibition, a science quiz and painting competition on the theme “Women in Science” was also held.
Highlighting the importance of science in today’s world, students from different colleges and schools of Tura town took part in the various competitions that were held to mark the celebration.
The programme was inaugurated by the present Director Academic and Administrative Department, MBOSE and Secretary R R Marak who spoke at length on the need to get oneself prepared to meet the challenges that the society and the world needed.
Principal of Don Bosco College, Tura Fr. Bivan Rodriques Mukhim spoke on the occasion and  encouraged the students to look inside them and realize their potentialities.
