NONGSTOIN: Nongstoin MLA, Macmillan Byrsat has said that the education policy in the state will be implemented soon.
Speaking at an inaugural function held at Ri-Lyngngam football playground on Saturday, Byrsat stated that the government has taken various steps to prepare the policy and plans to roll out the policy as soon as possible. He also took a dig at the opposition saying that that it was neglected for the past 47 years.
Byrsat also laid the foundation stone of Lyngngam Presbyterian College and also inaugurated the school building of Lyngngam Presbyterian Higher Secondary school, Mawthengkut funded by Asian Development Bank for Rs1.88 crore on the same day.
He said even though the chief minister and the deputy chief minister were unable to attend the programme, he advised the governing body to submit all memorandums to Mawshynrut MLA, Gigur Myrthong so that they can pass it to the chief minister and education minister for approval.
He also lauded the efforts of the Ri Lyngngam Presbytery for their decision to open a college in a remote area which has no proper institution for the benefit of poor students.
Saying that though Christians may be a minority in India, the best institutions are founded by missionaries and similarly in Ri Lyngngam College where the church leaders will be responsible in running the college.
He also assured that with the help from Myrthong, the sponsoring body of the college should apply for schemes from the Ministry of Tribal affairs and promised to help with the cause.
Myrthong, in his speech, also appealed to the people for cooperation in bringing development to the area. Myrthong said his aim is to focus on education which, according to him, is the only weapon to eradicate poverty and improve the economic condition in the constituency. He added that he always wanted to bring a community college in the region so that people who come from poor family can afford quality education. He also expressed his appreciation to the Ri Lyngngam Presbytery for their vision in setting up the college in an area where there is no higher or degree institution especially for those who cannot afford to study in Nongstoin or Shillong.
He also announced that the chief minister has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister Rural Development Programme for the college.
Others speakers include T Lyngwa, Deputy Commissioner West Khasi Hills, Rev RS Diengdoh, president Lyngngam Presbyterian HSS, HB Lyngkhoi President Governing body of Lyngngam Presbyterian College among others.
