SHILLONG:The practice of “Thlen” (serpent) and the hired killers “menshohnoh”, which is suspected to have reigned in this age too, might have cost the life of a 24-year-old, Macmillan Kharshandi at Lad Mawlang following a mob assault on Sunday in Mawkynrew constituency.

A group of nine individuals – Macmilan Kharshandy, Teiborlang Kharbangar, Ricky Dkhar, Alfready Sohtun, Vishal Deb Verma, Bijay Singh, Rohit Suting, Banteilang Kahrumnuid and Pappu Deka – went on a picnic to Syntung to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

They lost their way while they proceeded towards Shillong only to be assaulted by locals who were armed with sticks and sharp weapons. Out of the nine, three were assaulted resulting in the death of Kharshandi while six ran to the forest for safety from the raging crowd.
