SHILLONG: At a time when the entire state is locked down, MLAs, political parties, NGOS as well as religious groups and citizens from all walks of life continue to serve the downtrodden and weaker section of society.
On Sunday, around 600-700 people in West Shillong Constituency were provided essential commodities with the contribution of local MLA Mohendro Rapsang. Ten kgs of rice, a kg of dal, half a litre of mustard oil and one packet of soyabean were given per ration card at the distribution held at Hindu Mission.
Michael Pakyntein, a supporter of the MLA, while speaking to reporters, said that they were planning to distribute the commodities on Saturday itself but their truck was stranded on the highway.
Apart from the MLA, a group of citizens on Sunday also distributed snacks to people in Buddha Mandir in Forest Colony.
Altogether 55 people, including kids, were given snacks as some admitted that they have not eaten anything since last two days.
Earlier on Saturday, the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress in collaboration with the Mawshynrut Assembly Youth Congress tried to reach out to the least privileged sections, who live hand to mouth, from Nongrynniaw, Thangtngaw, Nongpdeng (J) and Nongdiengkain villages.
Fernandez S Dkhar, the general secretary of MPYC, said they will try their level best to render their service to the people of the state in such trying times.
Dkhar added that if there are people who are willing to donate eatable items such as rice and vegetables, MPYC teams available in each and every district and C&RD Blocks of the state.
