DC warns against hoarding

SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has urged the general public to report cases of hoarding by any trader, supplier or individual with proof (photograph etc) and assured action accordingly.
In a review meeting with the different Rangah Shnong (headman) and wholesalers and traders in the city in view of the lockdown situation, the DC has also warned people against price hike.
The meeting largely revolved around the availability of stocks, the supply chain and social distancing.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Matsiewdor War Nongbri, said that they discussed various issues relating to the prevailing COVID-19 situation and advisories of the government and the need and cooperation in every aspect especially in social distancing, home quarantine and isolation.
Stating that although the state does not have any cases and for it to remain this way, the only way to ensure is that advisories are followed.
Informing that the issue of essential commodities was also discussed, the deputy commissioner said that aspects like how they need to be picked up from the market, sold and distributed to the various localities and how the local authorities should assist the district administration during the distribution days so that social distancing is maintained at all cost.
She further said that many suggestions were given and the headmen were provided with WhatsApp number to give their recommendations so that the district administration can take up further issues and solve them.
Informing about the meeting with the wholesalers and traders of the city, the deputy commissioner said that the meeting discussed the need of having a clear understating on the availability of the stocks and how best to ensure that this stock remains adequate for the use of all the districts as they are all dependant on the stock of East Khasi Hills.
She said that more detailed directions will be issued to each of these wholesalers.
To a query on cases of alleged hoarding, the deputy commissioner said that they are having a full review on the inspections and checks on hoarding and also requested the help of the headmen.
The deputy commissioner also informed that the district administration is carrying out inspection from the supply branches to prevent price hike and the price list of essential commodities will be issued daily.
On the other hand, senior member Shillong Chamber of Commerce, Om Prakash Agarwal, said that the meeting was fruitful and they have apprised the Chief Secretary about a few problems they are facing who has assured them of all help.
On instances of alleged hoarding, he said that if it comes to their knowledge they will take it up immediately, but maintained that such allegations should be substantiated.
IDs for headmen
The Chief Secretary has authorised all deputy commissioners to issue photo Identity Cards to headmen in their respective jurisdictions to facilitate effective coordination due to the ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19.
