SHILLONG: A 26-year-old man, who was admitted at Bethany Hospital here, died after jumping from the building on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the incident had nothing to do with COVID-19.
“The individual was undergoing rehabilitation as he had psychiatric problems and in all likelihood it was a case of suicide,” the chief minister said.
The incident occurred the night after a senior doctor of the Bethany Hospital tested positive for COVID-19. He is the first COVID-19 patient in the state.
The deceased hailed from Jakrem in South West Khasi Hills district.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills SP Claudia Lyngwa said that in-patient, Tainingstar Jyrwa, committed suicide by jumping from the window of his ward into the stream flowing by the hospital.
An inquiry was conducted by the Laitumkhrah Police Station and it was ascertained that Jyrwa was admitted to the hospital on March 30 as he was a drug addict and needed psychiatric care.
“There is nothing to relate his suicide to recent events regarding COVID-19 and the public are advised to refrain from spreading any misinformation /rumours regarding the same,” the SP said.
