SHILLONG: West Garo Hills police on Friday decided to file a complaint against AHAM, Shillong unit for their alleged attempt to flare up communal tension in Phulbari and Rajabala, in West Garo Hills.
Earlier, AHAM had alleged that the Muslims are not allowing the Garos to purchase essential commodities in Phulbari and Rajabala area.
However, after thorough investigation, the police found out that the allegation made by the organisation was baseless and not true, West Garo Hills SP Dr. Raghavendra Kumar said.
The SP said that the police have verified from AHAM units of Phulbari and Rajabala area and they have maintained that they never gave such information to their AHAM, Shillong unit. “These are baseless allegations and we have spoken to the concerned people there and they told us that they are standing together in this difficult time,” he said while adding that it is very wrong to make such attempts of flaring up communal tension in difficult times.
He said Phulbari police station will take up the case against AHAM, Shillong unit.
The group earlier had asked the government to impose Section 144 CrPC in these areas and bring in the CRPF and other state security forces.
AMMSU stand
Meanwhile, the All Meghalaya Minority Students’ Union (AMMSU) has denied any incident of ‘stigmatising’ of people from Garo community by non-indigenous people from Rajabala and Phulbari areas, as alleged earlier by AHAM
Terming the claim as baseless, president of AMMSU, Nur Islam said, “We are living peacefully maintaining universal brotherhood between the two communities.
If any individual or group is doing it, then they should be named and a police complaint filed.
We also want such culprits to be punished”.  Islam while stating that there are ‘Black Sheeps’ in all communities added, that it was wrong to blame the whole community.
AHAM clarifies
The AHAM central body clarified that under no circumstances had it endorsed unconfirmed facts nor does it endorse any form of statement which may in any way can incite communal tension and that it is still resolute and firm in its commitment to propagate peace among different people group.
The AHAM said its previous statement had only asked the District Administration to take stock of the situation if at all it is true,” and in no way incites communal tension and doesn’t generalise all Muslim people but certain section of people from that community who were trying to create such tension during crisis, when they all need to collectively fight to stop the spread of the virus and help each other as human beings.
