SHILLONG: The local exporters’ body has criticised the decision of the state government to allow an Assam-based packaging unit to carry out export to Bangladesh.
In an order on April 27, the Political department has asked the deputy commissioners of East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills to facilitate export of goods to Bangladesh on alternative days by Guwahati-based York Print Pvt. Ltd.
The department had also referred to the letter of York Print Pvt. Ltd on April 25 in this regard.
The order said the state government has allowed transportation of goods from Deoduar, Kamrup, Assam to Tamabil, Bangladesh after compliance to standard operating procedures for screening of passengers.
However, Dolly Khonglah, secretary of Meghalaya International Exporters’ Chamber of Commerce, said if York Print from Assam can be allowed, the state government should give nod to export of limestone, boulders and coal to Bangladesh considering the plight of local people as the same norms followed by the Assam unit can be applied to Meghalaya exporters.
She said not only the exporters but many others who depend on export are also facing hardships due to the delay in resumption of border trade.
She also pointed out that the ban on export of large quantity of Meghalaya ginger to Bangladesh has also affected the locals.
However, the letter of the government said that the deputy commissioners should ensure that the vehicles and passengers are screened at both the entry and exit points. No passenger should be allowed to enter/exit without following the screening protocols as mandated, the order said.
According to the order, on return, all the persons should be under home quarantine as per the protocols laid down by health and family welfare department.
