GUWAHATI: Over 200 people belonging to Rajasthan who were stranded in different parts of Assam during the lockdown, returned to their home state on Wednesday on the buses which had transported as many as 391 students from Kota.

The Purvottar Pradeshiya Marwari Sammellan had taken the timely initiative to communicate with the Rajasthan government to facilitate the return of these stranded people on the 18 buses that had brought the students to the city in the wee hours of Monday.

“The Rajasthan government has sought a list of the stranded people from their state and we had accordingly contacted some of them. More than 4500 calls were received in just two days but a majority of them were calls made by people from outside the state and region. We had arranged transport of 350 people but many are still stuck in other districts,” V. Sanganeria, spokesperson for the Sammelan, told The Shillong Times here on Wednesday.

District and police officials of Kamrup metro were present to see them off to their home state, a majority of whom had come to Assam for trade, work and travel purposes, but were left stranded owing to the nationwide lockdown from the midnight of March 24, 2020.

“Most of the people belong to Jaipur where the buses would be directly heading to. Some of them also had medical emergencies in the state. They were allowed return after verification by government officials,” he said.
