TURA: As a precautionary measure to safeguard the district after the mysterious deaths of pigs reported from certain parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner has prohibited transportation of pigs from other states into the district until further orders.
According to the order, all government and private pig farms and farmers should take adequate measures with regard to strict hygiene and bio-security such as disinfection of the farms as well as equipments and restrict entry of any outside persons into their pig farms.
Earlier on Tuesday, an emergency meeting of the District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Officer, South West Garo Hills, was held with all the AH & Veterinary officers at Ampati to discuss preventive measures to contain the outbreak of suspected African Swine Fever or ASF in the district.
Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) have also been constituted to prevent and control the possible outbreak of the ASF in the district and have been activated with immediate effect.
It was decided in the meeting to spread awareness among the villagers by advising them to consume pork only after proper cooking (above 70 degree Celsius) for at least 20 minutes and in case of high fever in pigs and abnormal mortality of pigs, the matter should be brought to the notice of the District AH & Veterinary Officer/Block AH & Vety officers.
