Mushroom poison death toll rises to 4
JOWAI: Four people have died due to food poisoning after consuming wild mushroom in Lamin village under Amlarem Sub-Division, West Jaintia Hills district. Earlier, two persons Katdilia Khonglah and Morison Dhar died after eating the wild mushroom and two more of Khonglah’s siblings passed away at NEIGRIHMS hospital, Shillong. Sixteen-year-old Synran Khonglah and her 28-year-old elder brother Lapynshai Khonglah. It may be mentioned here that 18 members from three families who consumed wild mushroom collected from a jungle near the village felt sick after consuming it. Dhar and Katdilia who collected the mushroom died last week.
Mid-day meal workers seek pay hike
JOWAI: Mid-day meal workers from various schools in Jaintia hills under the banner of the All Jaintia mid-day meal workers union, Jowai is seeking for hike in their pay by the Central government. “We are paid only Rs 10,000 annually and it is difficult for us to maintain our family if the government does not hike our pay”, said the union’s general secretary, N Toi. “We strongly hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have pity on us and hike our pay by Rs 5000 besides our regular payment”, she added. The union also lauded Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbai and Principal Secretary Education, DP Wahlang, for their intervention in the pay hike with Union Education Minster, Ramesh Pokriyal Nishank recently. It also urged Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma to take up the matter with the Prime Minister and the Union Education Minister.
Retd teachers’ body condoles demise of ex-Edmund’s Prof
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Retired College Teachers’ Association (MRCTA) has condoled the demise of Cassandra Syiemlieh, Cassandra Syiemlieh, former lecturer of St. Edmund’s College, Shillong in the department of English, who passed away on Wednesday. She was about 80 years old. Syiemlieh retired from her service from the college nearly two decades ago after nearly 30 long years of service to the institution. A teacher of amiable personality, she was much respected and loved by all her colleagues, friends and students owing to her depth of knowledge, wisdom and most pleasing disposition. She was also a renowned cultural activist, actor and avid singer and remained associated with a number of social organisations and academic bodies.
GSU appeal to telecos to provide fast internet
SHILLONG: The Garo Students Union (Khasi Hills Zone) Shillong has appealed to all network providers to ensure fast internet speeds in different parts of the state so that students do not face problems in attending their online classes, a statement issued here said. According to the union, internet speed in some interior rural as well as urban areas is so poor and the students have been facing a lot of difficulties. “Despite the ongoing lockdown, many institutions are trying their best to continue with the syllabus. The telecom companies can contribute greatly in this by ensuring smooth internet services,” the statement said.
