SHILLONG:  As the entire economy reels under the present crisis, several questions arise with regard to the educational institutions’ finances as most of them depend on the fees paid by the students. While some institutions are government aided, some are on their toes to even pay salaries to their staff.
A social activist from the state, Banshai Marbaniang, has voiced his concern regarding private schools in the state, which are presently in distress as the Centre has asked them not to force parents to pay fees during the lockdown period.
“If parents don’t pay the school fees, how the teaching and non-teaching staff of the private unaided schools will meet their daily requirements,” the activist said in letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, adding that expenses such as monthly salaries of teachers, support staff and other related expenses are met from collection of fees.
The government has taken a number of praise-worthy initiatives during the lockdown for the welfare of the citizens, however, Marbaniang said, the teachers and non-teaching staff of the private schools should also be looked after given that schools are the foundation to build a better society.
