SHILLONG: In view of uncertainty over the expiry of nationwide lockdown in view of COVID-19,  the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya & Federation of Khasi States has urged the traditional heads to constitute village committees on agriculture and animal husbandry to deliberate on steps as to how the citizens in the villages can be self-sustained during the war against COVID-19.
The appeal was made to all the village heads, the Rangbah Shnong, Sordar Shnong, Myntri Shnong, Bakhraw, Syiem Raid, Sordar Raid, Lyngdoh Raid, Lyngskor, the Syiem, Lyngdoh, Sirdar, Dolloi, and Nokma, and village councils in Garo Hills to  urgently take necessary steps in this regard.
In a statement, the Adviser & Spokesperson, Federation of Khasi States, John Kharshiing said that the move is necessary so that the farmers are encouraged during this time of hardship and it will also be an opportunity to discuss at ground zero how villagers can plan roadmaps on sustainable agriculture and to support each other.
It has also been mentioned by scientists and health departments that the people must consume healthy traditional and local food so as to build a strong immune system to counter COVID-19.
