GUWAHATI: The Assam government has urged the Centre to extend the lockdown by at least two more weeks to fight the COVID-19 pandemic

Addressing a Press conference here on Friday, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “We have submitted to the Centre that the lockdown be extended by two weeks. We have also submitted our proposal to implement the lockdown with necessary rules and relaxations.”

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked the states to forward their recommendations for extension, relaxation and withdrawal of lockdown during the video-conferencing with the chief ministers.

“We have accordingly forwarded our recommendations. The Prime Minister will take a call keeping in mind the recommendations from all the states,” Sonowal added.

The third lockdown to fight spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country will end on May 17 and the decision on extension or relaxation will be announced by the Centre.
