GUWAHATI: After remaining shut for over a week Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will resume functioning from Saturday as the authorities have decided to lift containment zone tag from the institution as well as the surrounding area.

Though 2200 samples of doctors, nurses, staff and people in surrounding area on the institution were sent for COVID-19 test, all have tested negative except two. The tests were conducted after a post-graduate (medicine) students of the institution had tested COVID-19 positive on May 7 last. A student of Regional Dental College also tested COVID-19 positive.

“Visited GMCH to discuss reopening of Hospital & Medical College from tomorrow. We’ve taken 2200 samples of doctors, nurses, staff & people in surrounding areas; all have tested negative except 2. In view of this, we’re resuming operations. Surrounding containment zone freed,” tweeted the State Health Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma.
