SHILLONG: Hailing Centre economic response to COVID-19, state BJP on Thursday voiced displeasure over the manner in which the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) scheme is implemented in the state where free rice should be distributed to the beneficiaries for three months.
“The central government has done a lot for the benefits of the people in the country by announcing Rs 20 lakh crore package which would come in white paper soon,” state BJP president Ernest Mawrie said in a press conference held at the BJP office on Thursday.
He, however, said that there were irregularities in few constituencies on the implementation of PMGKY in the state, especially distribution of free rice for the months of April, May and June.
“We have received complaints that there were some irregularities as the distribution of rice to the beneficiaries was short and there were instances of wholesalers and fair price shop dealers charging extra money from the beneficiaries for transporting rice and pulse,” the state BJP president said.
“From our side, after receiving complaints, we have written to the Chief Secretary MS Rao on this. We also received many complaints from Garo Hills on the irregularities related to distribution of free rice,” Mawrie said.
The state BJP also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister and his Cabinet for announcing the much-needed economic package. Mawrie said the country is faced with a lot of hurdles and this comes as a welcome gesture. He also assured that the state coordinators have been appointed and they will ensure that the funds will percolate to the beneficiaries at all levels.
