Sonowal mulls job avenues for returnees

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal held a meeting here on Sunday to discuss issues of providing employment opportunities to the state’s people returning from outside.
Sonowal directed the panchayat and rural development department to allot job cards and work under MGNREGA to the returning migrant workers at the earliest.
He also directed the skill development department to take steps for imparting training to the returning workers for upgrading their skills.
Instructions were issued to identify skills of the labourers and provide training at the block development level through a digital platform.
The chief minister also directed the industries department to prepare district-wise list of MSMEs for providing benefits to the sector under the Rs 20 lakh-crore economic package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently.
He further instructed the finance department to discuss with banks about ways to provide loans to the returning labourers for engaging them in productive sectors.
The meeting was attended by state industries and commerce minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary, panchayat and rural development minister, Naba Kumar Doley, besides top officials of various departments.
