Meet discusses impact on farmers
SHILLONG: The Hills Farmers’ Union (HFU) held the 1st advisory meet of the COVID-19 Pandemic Farmers’ Crisis Committee on Wednesday via video link, a statement said. The meet discussed the impact of COVID on farmers. The members spoke about various issues faced by the state’s agrarian society and leveraging the opportunities that have emerged due to the crisis with technology intervention besides various strategies and methodologies. A follow-up meeting will be held in the coming week wherein a policy advocacy report with its findings of the gaps and the strategy to resolve them will be prepared and tabled, which will then be submitted to the state government by May-end, the statement said. The meeting was attended by CEO of NABARD Foundation, managing director of NERAMAC, Ministry of DoNER, DGM, advisory & consulting, NeDFi, senior technical officer, UNDP, chairman SPIKAP/adviser, Federation of Khasi States, advisers of Hill Farmers’ Union and industry experts.

CSC help to apply for scholarships
KHLIEHRIAT: The Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills has urged the common service centres (CSCs) and common facility centres (CFCs) in the district to assist students applying for scholarship programmes and other schemes available for the minority, a statement said.

Prominent leader passes away
NONGPOH: One of the prominent leaders, who have been serving the society in various capacities, Shelis Mohon Roy, 108, passed away at his residence at Lumnongthymmai Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi on Wednesday. The funeral of centenarian Roy will be held on Thursday at the cemetery of Church of God, Lumnongthymmai Byrnihat. Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun, while expressing his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, said that Roy had been involved for a significant time of his life in serving the society and his demise is a great loss to him and the society as a whole. Sohtun also informed that Roy was involved in the fight against the Sixth Schedule along with Late Rev. JJM Nichols Roys and was also a former secretary of the Byrnihat Pyllun area.
