Villages sans power for over 5 months
MAWKYRWAT: Failure on part of the authorities to replace or repair the damaged transformers at Nongmluh and Mawphansaw villages in South West Khasi Hills has brought misery to the residents, who have had to live in the dark for over 5 months.  President of Khasi Students’ Union Nongmluh Unit Adamanstar Syrman, on Friday, informed that the transformer at Mawphansaw was damaged since November 2019, while the one at Nongmluh was impaired in December 2019. Expressing concern over the inability and irresponsibility of MeECL to replace or rectify the damaged transformers in the two villages, Syrman said that the residents have been facing numerous problems. He said that the union met the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of MeECL in Mawkyrwat this week to discuss about the issue. The SDO informed that the transformer meant for Mawphansaw village has reached Mawkyrwat and it will soon be installed, however, with regard to the damaged transformer at Nongmluh village, the office has not taken any steps. The union urged upon the MeECL to fix the damaged transformers in the two villages. Further, it has also asked the local legislator and the district administration to look into the matter.

Telecos urged to ensure quality service
TURA: Network service providers from West Garo Hills were, on Friday, directed to resolve existing problems and ensure uninterrupted service in the region during the current crisis arising out of COVID-19. After complaints were received from various sections of the people and with regard to the prevailing situation and continuation of lockdown in the region, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh convened a meeting at his office chamber with all the network service providers of the region including BSNL to discuss matters relating to network connectivity in the district. Ram Singh, while extending his full support and assistance, directed all the service providers to resolve their problems and ensure uninterrupted service in order to carry out the required activities smoothly.  Further, while enquiring about the poor service provided by the Reliance-Jio in the region, the representative of the concerned service provider cited various technical problems regarding which a direction was given asking them to resolve their problems as early as possible and provide better service in the coming days.

DC extends night curfew in EGH
WILLIAMNAGAR: The District Magistrate of East Garo Hills, Swapnil Tembe, has extended the lockdown and night curfew in the entire district till 6 am of May 26. Movement of private vehicles, except those with valid car passes and exempted categories and individuals between 7 pm and 6 am are prohibited, besides operations of weekly and regular markets, tea and food stalls, saloons, beauty parlours, commercial, financial and educational institutions. Interstate and inter-district movement of vehicles will remain restricted. However, other permitted activities will remain the same as notified earlier.

All IMFL shops closed in EJH
KHLIEHRIAT: The Deputy Commissioner (Excise) of East Jaintia Hills has declared the closure of all IMFL “ON” license shops till May 31 in the entire district until further orders in order to prevent the possible spread of COVID-19, a statement said.

Dorbar distributes over 7K kg of rice
SHILLONG: The Lapalang Dorbar Shnong has sponsored 7,803 kg of rice through public distribution system (PDS) to 415 families, a statement issued here said. The Dorbar Shnong has also thanked some benefactors, who contributed for the needy, including MLA Charles Pyngrope (5,250 kg rice, 300 kg pulses and sugar, 8 sets of PPE), MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem (1,500 kg rice, 2 pumps for sanitisation),MP Vincent Pala (1,350 kg of rice) Gorkha Training Centre (400 kg rice and 400 kg atta), Nepali Mahila Committee (200 packets of essentials) and POSOCO, NERLDC (50 packets essentials).
