SHILLONG: State Government is working on three major sports projects besides several small infrastructures projects for hosting the National Games in 2022.
Replying to a motion, Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh said that despite the lockdown, preparation for the National Games is going on and significant progress has been made. He said that the main stadium will be constructed at Usmawli at a 50-acre land, and the project is awaiting the approval of the Union Cabinet. Another major project is coming up in Tura with the renovation of PA Sangma integrated complex at a cost of Rs 125 crore out of which an amount of Rs 95 was already sanctioned and Rs 43 crore has been released as the first instalment.
Government has planned another comprehensive project at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in polo with an indoor facility at a cost of Rs 125 crores. Lyngdoh also stated that some more stadiums will be constructed in Ampati and Babadam. He also added that the archery field will be constructed in Umsawli.The government is also looking to use Umiam water sports complex for various water sports like Kayaking and rowing besides using the infrastructure of Meghalaya battalions for indoor shooting. It was also informed that the Government has held discussions with several armed forces in the city to use their infrastructure and manpower for the training of the teams and players from Meghalaya.
The 39th Edition of the National Games is slated to be held in the year 2022 in the State of Meghalaya.
